Williams Two-Hitter, Denis Grand Slam Power Brakettes to 4-0, 13-3 Wins

July 10 - by Ilan Woll - As Sunday morning arrived, two tight games with the Maryland Chill resulted in a buzz in Stratford around the double header's opening game with Nicole Williams facing off against Alanna Molz.

The Brakettes scored in the first, with a Val Suto walk. Brittany Younan then sacrificed her to second. With two outs, Jolie Duffner powered the ball to the fence in centerfield for the early lead, scoring Suto.

Stratford added another run in the fourth as Duffner continued her offensive display, tripling into the right field corner. She then scored as Hannah Cooper lofted a ball to deep center for a sacrifice fly.

Nicole Williams, in the meantime was perfect through four inning, before finally allowing a single to Meghan Holquist in the fifth.

A pair of walks, and a single by Reilly Vicendese in the seventh were the extent of the Chill's base runners.

The offense continued for the Brakettes in the fifth as Casey Harding walked. Alexis Bazos then lined a single to centerfield. A Suto sacrifice moved the runners into scoring position as Younan then slammed a single up the middle, scoring both runners for the 4-0 win.

Nicole Williams struck out ten in the win, advancing to 7-1 on the year. Offensively, Jolie Duffner had a pair of extra base hits. Courtney Cashman also contributed two infield singles in the game.

For the second game, Abby Abramson took the circle against Ally Wieman.

Unfortunately for Wieman, who appeared in relief in the first game, it seemed the Brakettes had figured out her pitching as Val Suto started the first singling to left. Britt Younan then drove a liner to right field. Denise Denis then singled to bring in the first run. Jolie Duffner continued her torrid hitting gapping a pitch into right centerfield, scoring both Younan and Denis. After Gabby Laccona reached on an error, Noel Lent smashed a ball to the fence, plating both Duffner and Laccona for the early 5-0 lead.

The Brakettes onslaught continued in the second. Courtney Cashman led off the inning with a walk. Suto then singled over the drawn-in infield, and Younan added a sharp line drive, loading the bases. Denise Denis then saw the pitch she liked, driving the ball over the fence in right center for a grand slam and the nine run lead. This was her fourth home run of the year.

The Chill, after threatening in the first and second, finally got to Abby Abramson in the third. Molly Nies led off reaching on a throwing error. Patty Drumheller singled. Reilly Vicendese then drove a pitch in front of the left fielder, plating Nies. Rylee Kinsella followed suit for an RBI single. A wild pitch brought in the third run to give some comeback hopes for Maryland before Abramson retired the last three batters of the frame.

The home team added three more runs in the bottom of the frame with Lauren Pitney drilling her second dinger over the fence in center. Laccona then singled, scoring as Jenn Vazquez had her first hit as a Brakette, a double to the right-center gap. Megan Hodgdon then drove her in with a single to rebuild the lead to nine at 12-3. Hits by Suto and Duffner added one more run in the fourth inning to finish the scoring.

Abby Abramson (3-0) retired the last nine batters she faced for the win. striking out nine in her five innings. Val Suto led the Brakettes with three hits. Denise Denis, Brittany Younan, and Jolie Duffner added two each. Denise Denis had five RBIs while Duffner added three. Reilly Vicendese had two hits for the Chill.

The Brakettes return this upcoming Thursday, hosting the CT Seahawks in a 7pm double header. Friday and Saturday the Rock Gold come in for twin bills, with a single game on Sunday. All games will be webcast on Brakettes.com
