CONNECTICUT BRAKETTES, RIPTIDE GAME CALLED OFF AFTER FOUR INNINGS WITH BRAKETTES LEADING 1-0
June 1, 2006 - STRATFORD- The Connecticut Brakettes' long awaited debut in the National Pro Fastpitch league will have to wait for one more day. The Brakettes led the New England Riptide 1-0 after four innings before a fast-moving thunderstorm deposited a few inches of rain on the Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame diamond resulting in the cancellation of the contest. Even though the Brakettes were three outs from their first official NPF victory, it will go in the books as a no-contest. It will be rescheduled later in the weekend. The teams return to action Friday, June 2 for a 7:05 p.m. game at DeLuca Field. The Brakettes and Riptide also play 7:05 p.m. Saturday and 5:05 p.m. Sunday. With a crowd of 778 on hand, the teams were scoreless after 2 innings before the Brakettes reached Danielle Henderson, a former five-year Brakettes pitcher, to take the lead. Kelly Kretschman led off the inning by bouncing a grounder up the middle that caromed off Hendersons glove and into right center field for a double. Stephanie Best sacrificed Kretschman into scoring position, but Henderson got Kellie Wilkerson on a ground out to shortstop Destiny Frankenstein, who made a nice play to nip Wilkerson at first base. Germaine Fairchild, who won the Brakettes batting title with a .389 average last year, then lined Hendersons first pitch into right field for an RBI single. Sarah Pauly, who compiled a 24-8 record last year, had allowed only two base-runners through four innings. She didnt allow a hit and struck out six Riptide batters. |
