RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY, THE CONNECTICUT BRAKETTES WOULD LIKE TO PLAY THE NEW ENGLAND RIPTIDE

June 3, 2006 - You win some, you lose some and some get rained out! As far as the Connecticut Brakettes are concerned, they have had enough of this rainy weather.

For the third day in a row the Brakettes have been rained out of their National Pro Fastpitch league game with the New England Riptide at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. The Brakettes and Riptide were scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday, but the constant rain and soggy outfield forced the postponement. The Brakettes have had more rainouts already this year than all of last year.

The two teams will try again Sunday to get their seasons under way when they play a single-admission doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The two games that have been lost to the rain will be made up at later dates during the regular season.

"I know the hurricane season officially began Thursday, but this is ridiculous," said Connecticut Brakettes Manager John Stratton. "I feel like I’m watching the movie Ground Hog Day except when I wake up it is still raining."

Stratton will send Sarah Pauly (24-8) and Leslie Malerich (15-3) to the hill for Sunday’s games. Pauly was the starting pitcher in Thursday’s scheduled season opener and she took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth with the Brakettes leading 1-0 when rain forced the game to be called off.

"Tickets from Thursday’s game will be honored at Sunday’s doubleheader or at any future Brakettes home game," said General Manager Bob Baird.

If the Brakettes are unable to open their season Sunday, they will have to wait until Wednesday when they travel to Allentown, PA, to face the Philadelphia Force in the opener of a four-game series at Bicentennial Park. The Brakettes’ next home stand begins June 12 with consecutive doubleheaders against Chinese Taipei’s Olympic team.
