Brakettes Take Last Game of Series From Texas
July 9, 2006 - The Connecticut Brakettes jumped to an early 6-0 lead on the Thunder Saturday night, en route to a 7-1 victory. The win allowed the Brakettes to secure a split of the four-game series with Texas. Kaci Clark recorded her second win of the series as she went the distance, striking out six and walking none. She allowed five hits, while allowing just one earned run. She benefited from a solid offensive attack, as the Brakettes banged out ten hits and had 17 baserunners. Kelly Kretschman went 3-4, with a double, two singles, a walk, and two runs scored. She also had an RBI. Kellie Wilkerson went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The scoring started in the first, as Kretschman walked, and advanced to third on Wilkersons single. She was plated on a wild pitch by Texas starter Krystal Lewallen, as Wilkerson moved up to third. Wilkerson then scored on an RBI single by Germaine Fairchild, to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Brakettes big inning was the third, as four more runs came in. Julie Brooks started it off with a single to right field. Next up was Adrienne Alo, who was hit by a pitch, moving Brooks to second. Kretschman then singled to load the bases. Christa Williams was then brought into the game, replacing Lewallen. With one out, Wilkerson lined a two-RBI single. All three runners scored, as Kretschman took home on an errant throw. Wilkerson scored two batters later on another Texas error. Williams pitched through the sixth, giving up two runs, and was replaced by Nicole Neuerberg in the seventh. Texas managed to score a run in the second, but Clark stranded two runners on base, to crush the last big threat for the Thunder. The Brakettes scored their last run in the third, as Stephanie Hill bunted her way onto first base. She advanced to second on a groundout by Brooks, and scored on Kretchmans double. Clark was solid the rest of the way, as she continually avoided trouble, helped by a strong defensive effort behind her. She appreciated the help. It was an all-around, impressive Brakette game. We worked hard at the plate, and the girls were great with their gloves. It makes it easy to get outs when they get you a little breathing room. Clark, who also won the first game of the series, improved to 2-2 on the year. Lewallen dropped to 1-2, as the Thunder fell back to 14-10, and fourth place in the league. The Brakettes victory moved them into second place, and improved their mark to 12-7 in NPF play. The two teams will go at it again in Connecticut starting Thursday. |
