Jen Owens' Brother Gets the Call-up

July 10, 2006 - Brakette third baseman Jen Owens is no longer the only Owens family member playing their respective sport at the highest level possible. Her big brother, Henry Jr., was called up to the New York Mets' Major League roster Thursday, as Pedro Martinez went on the disabled list.

The hard throwing Owens was the closer for the Mets' Double-A affiliate Binghampton, and did not disappoint the Mets' brass during his minor league days. He sported a 2-1 record with a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings pitched. The relief pitcher dominated his competition, as he struck out 51 batters while walking only eight. He also recorded 11 saves, and allowed only eight hits and three earned runs on the season.

Owens was upbeat after hearing the good news. "I was on the bus from Bowie (Md.) to Trenton (N.J.), and Juan Samuel, our manager, called me up to the front of the bus...walking up there, I thought it might be my time...Sure enough, it was."

Owens, 27, had been on the Mets' 40-man roster since impressing the higher-ups in spring training. Consistently clocked in the high 90's, Owens joins former teammate and scheduled Saturday starter Mike Pelfrey on the big league roster. Owens talked to his sister Jen after the Brakettes game Thursday night, and discussed his promotion.

Jen was overjoyed after hearing the news. "I'm so excited for him. We knew he would probably be a September call-up at the very latest, but this is even better. He deserves this shot, and we are so proud of him."
