Fairchild's Hit Keys Brakettes' 3-0 Win Over Riptide
July 27, 2006 - Sarah Pauly was in this position before. Last week in Tucson she lost a tough 1-0 ten inning decision to the Arizona Heat. This time it would be different. Kellie Wilkerson walked with one out in the sixth inning and dashed to third on Jessica Merchant's double down the left field line. Up to the plate stepped Germaine Fairchild, who had been hitless in her first two at-bats. "G" delivered a line single to left field, scoring Wilkerson. On the throw home the ball got past catcher KJ Kelley, allowing Merchant to score and Fairchild to advance to third. Stephanie Hill followed with a long sacrifice fly to center, driving in Fairchild with the third run. This would be all Sarah needed as she held the Riptide scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing only a bunt single to Jackie Pasquerella and a single to center by Lindsey Angus. Pauly improved to 10-4, tying for the league lead in wins. Kelly Kretschman, 1-for-2 and a walk, had the only other hit for the Brakettes, a single in the first inning. This raises her average to .417, tying Anne Steffan of the Bandits for the league lead. The Brakettes improved their record to 19-10, two games ahead of the Riptide in the battle for second place. |
