Raiders Fend off Havoc to Advance to Loser’s Bracket Final

Sunday, August 7, Game 15 - The New York Raiders beat the New York City Havoc 1-0 in an elimination game in the 3rd Annual Women’s Major Softball National Championships at DeLuca Field on Sunday afternoon, knocking the 2009 WMS champions out of the tournament.

The game was originally set to be played Saturday night at 9:00, but pouring rain moved into the area late in the winner’s bracket final between the Stratford Brakettes and St. Louis Saints. After an hour-plus rain delay, the game was rescheduled for Sunday morning. Mother Nature had another idea, as early morning downpours again put the start time in question.

After several hours of waiting and a considerable grounds crew effort, the game finally started just after 2:30 in the afternoon.

The game was a classic pitcher’s duel between 2009 WMS Most Outstanding Pitcher (Joan Joyce Award) Alyson Chiaramonte of the Havoc and the Raiders’ Capri Catalano.

Neither hurler would allow a run in the first four innings, as the teams both worked in and out of trouble. Catalano limited the Havoc to just one hit, a bunt-single by Liz Strein in the fourth inning.

Chiaramonte allowed five hits in going the distance, two of which were provided by Jen Keller.

The only run of the game was unearned, as Keli Leong reached on an error by second baseman Kim Procida in the fifth inning. Leong ended up at second base on the play, as Keller came to the plate.

Keller grounded to the left side and beat out an infield single, and went to second when the throw from shortstop Jeanine Leo sailed off the mark. Leong came home from second for the run, which proved to be the deciding score.

The Havoc took fifth in the tournament, following a fourth-place finish a year ago. With the win, the Raiders reached the loser’s bracket final against the St. Louis Saints, whose berth in the contest came via an 8-0 loss to the Stratford Brakettes in the winner’s bracket final.

Havoc catcher Nicole Adisano made the All-WMS team for the second straight year as one of the two catchers chosen by the local media.

All remaining 2011 WMS tournament games are being live video webcast on brakettes.com.
