SOPHIA DICOCCO EARNS NESCAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARD FOR TUFTS SOFTBALL

April 15 - MEDFORD, MA - For the second week in a row, a member of the Junior Brakettes softball team was honored by the New England Small College Athletic Conference with its Pitcher of the Week Award.

Freshman pitcher Sophia DiCocco was this past week's recipient as she led Tufts University to a sweep over Colby College and a 3-0 record in division.

In 11 innings of work DiCocco did not allow a run and she won two games for the Jumbos, who are now 5-1 overall. DiCocco leads the pitching staff with a 3-1 mark.

Last Saturday she started game two and allowed just three hits in four innings, combining with teammate Nicole Russo for an 11-0 shutout. She then pitched her first individual collegiate shutout in game one on Sunday, a 1-0 victory. She did not allow a walk in two outings.

DiCocco, a southpaw, had an outstanding 2020 season for Coach Mary Sciglimpaglia's Junior Brakettes both pitching and at the plate. She led the team with an 8-3 record and a 1.12 ERA in 66 innings of work and she struck out 37 and walked only 12. The left-handed hitting DiCocco also compiled a .366 batting average, going 14-for-41 with eight RBI.

The Bozrah, CT, resident is the daughter of Michael and Susan DiCocco.

Maddie Procyk of Monroe, another Junior Brakettes pitcher, was the NESCAC Pitcher of the Week for April 5.

JUNIOR BRAKETTES TRIO SPARK UB SOFTBALL TEAM TO SWEEP AND 6-0 RECORD

April 10 - BUFFALO, NY - Thanks to the efforts of three Junior Brakettes players the University of Bridgeport softball team extended its record to 6-0 April 9 by sweeping host D'Youville College by scores of 5-4 and 2-1. Both games went to extra innings.

Leadoff hitter and centerfielder Meg McFarland of Monroe, freshman infielder Kiana Robinson of Hamden, and pitcher Sam Schiebe, a teammate of McFarland at Masuk High, were the key players in the two victories.

Bridgeport was the pre-season favorite to win the East Coast Conference and it currently sits atop the standings. In 2019 the Purple Knights won the league title and advanced to the NCAA Division II Regionals before seeing last season's 8-5 campaign shortened by the Coronavirus.

McFarland and Robinson both had two hits in game one to lead the UB attack. The Purple Knights won when Stamford, CT, senior Kaira Ramon delivered a run-scoring hit.

In the nightcap, McFarland drove in the winning run and made Schiebe a winner. Schiebe worked all eight innings. She allowed seven hits and struck out five. Only one of the runs was earned.

Robinson's two-run hit tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth before McFarland's clutch safety put UB ahead.

MADDIE PROCYK EARNS NESCAC PITCHER OF WEEK HONORS

April 6, 2021 - AMHERST, MA - Maddie Procyk of Monroe earned New England Small College Athletic Conference "Pitcher of the Week" honors last week for unbeaten Amherst College (3-0).

Procyk, the former Masuk High School All-State player, earned two wins in two starts against Wesleyan in Middletown Saturday and Sunday. The Mammoths swept the three-game series, winning 7-0 and 8-0 on Saturday and 8-5 Sunday.

Maddie made her first college appearance in Saturday's second game, a five-inning mercy run rule game. She allowed only two hits and struck out two batters. She also had a base hit and scored twice. In the nightcap she pitched the first four innings before moving to left field with the Mammoths leading 5-1. She struck out five and walked one, while she had a base hit and scored two runs.

In nine innings pitching, Procyk held Wesleyan to a .194 batting average and she only walked one batter of the 31 she faced. The Amherst defense was outstanding as they played errorless ball in three games.

Procyk will be one of the mainstays for the Junior Brakettes again this summer, both pitching or playing anywhere in the field. Last season she hit .422 with four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI in 18 games for the Junior Brakettes. She also had a 4-2 record with a 1.90 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work.

She is the daughter of Michael and Pamela Procyk of Monroe.

NOTE: The NESCAC also includes Trinity College of Hartford, led by Stratford Brakettes first baseman Gillian Birk, and Tufts University of Medford, MA, featuring Junior Brakettes southpaw pitcher Sophia DiCocco of Bozrah.

JUNIOR’S GILLIAN KANE NAMED SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE CO-CAPTAIN

December 2020 -
Junior Brakettes pitcher Gillian Kane of New Canaan has been named co-captain of the Springfield College softball team for the 2021 season. Kane is a junior pitcher for the Pride. After a solid 2019 freshmen season, she was the starting and winning pitcher in Springfield’s only game last spring, a 5-2 win over Amherst before the season was abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 virus.

In 2018 Kane started 17 games, winning nine in 85.1 innings with a 4.18 ERA. She had six complete games and struck out 37 batters. Her combined no-hitter against Westfield State was the first for the Pride since 2011. Playing in 25 games, she had 11 hits and drove in as many runs.

Winning three games and posting a 2.13 ERA last summer for Coach Mary Sciglimpaglia Brainard’s Junior Brakettes, Kane batted .412 with a home run, eight RBI and nine runs scored. In two years the Junior Brakettes were 25-11-1 and 24-11. When you delete the wins and losses against the Stratford Brakettes the record is 48-8-1.
