Brakettes' Bats Explode in Weekend Sweep of NYC Havoc, High School All-Stars
June 19, 2010 - The Stratford Brakettes (12-1) blasted eight home runs over the weekend, and scored 35 runs on 41 hits, in a trio of wins over the CT High School All-Stars and the NYC Havoc, at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford. The Brakettes picked up their tenth win of the season on Friday night, as they defeated an all-star team comprised of the top high school seniors from around the state. Whitney Canion earned the win and improved to 3-0 on the season, striking out eight batters in five innings of work. Sara Plourde pitched the last four innings, fanning six All-Stars along the way. The Brakettes were paced by Denise Denis against the All-Stars, as she launched a two-run shot in the fifth inning, her second home run of the season. She had a total of three RBIs, as she also had a sac fly in the fourth. Ashley Waters smashed a solo shot in the third inning, her third home run of the year. Jess Serio and Sara Plourde also hit their first long balls of the season, and Plourdes connection was her first home run as a Brakette. The All-Stars scored one run in the fourth inning, and one in the ninth frame of the nine-inning contest. Taylor Smith provided the firepower in the fourth, as she lined a double to score Julianne Vincent from second base. Courtney Collins had the RBI single in the ninth that scored Katie Treado, who also singled. The Brakettes also marched past the NYC Havoc on Saturday afternoon, putting up 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep. Canion struck out eight in the early contest, pushing her mark to 4-0 for the year. She also pitched the last inning of the second game, working a 1-2-3 fifth inning in relief of Plourde. Canion allowed just two hits to the Havoc, both coming off the bat of Shannon Skeggs, who also worked a walk. The Havoc threatened early, putting a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Canion worked out of trouble each time. Waters reached on an error in the first inning, and scored on a triple by Denis. As Denis slid safely into third base, the throw from right field sailed past the bag, and Denis advanced home on the error for a 2-0 lead. Lyndsay Mouse reached on a walk in the second inning, and advanced on an infield single by Lindsey Kay Bright. Mouse went to third on the throw to first, giving Carly Normandin runners at the corners. Normandin grounded to first, and Mouse beat the throw home to score the Brakettes third run. Mandie Fishback singled home Waters in the fifth inning for another run, after Waters led off with a base hit, and moved to second on a grounder by Kristyn Sandberg. The Brakettes led 4-0, but were hardly finished. Normandin hit her second homer of the 2010 campaign, a two-run shot that also scored Bright, who had reached on her second infield single of the game. Canion retired the side in order in the seventh, securing the victory for Stratford. The Brakettes continued their offensive onslaught in the late game, as they exploded for 15 runs on 19 hits. Stratford picked up 16 singles to go along with three home runs in the victory, a run rule-shortened five inning contest. The Brakettes scored three runs in the first inning on five singles. Six more base hits and an error in the second led to the Brakettes picking up five more runs for an 8-0 lead. Bright led off the third inning with another infield hit, giving her four on the day. Waters followed with her third single in as many at bats, bringing up pinch-hitter Canion. Canion singled to score Bright, and move Waters to third. Sandberg then smashed a three-run shot, her first as a Brakette, to put Stratford up 12-0. Waters contributed her team-leading fourth homer in the fourth inning, a solo shot that brought the lead to 13-0. After Canion lined another single, Sandberg blasted her second long ball of the game, and closed out the scoring at 15-0. Plourde (1-0) picked up the win for her first victory as a Brakette. She struck out three batters in four innings, and combined with Canion for an abbreviated no-hitter. The Brakettes return to action on Thursday night, as they face the CT Mirage Gold at DeLuca Field in a 7:00 doubleheader. The Brakettes previously scheduled game for Friday against the CT Mirage 23-U has been moved back to Friday night, July 9th. First Game
