BRAKETTES SWEEP DAY 2, WIN SAINTS INVITATIONAL
June 12 - by Michael Amento - For the 2nd consecutive day, the Brakettes scored three victories, this time without allowing a single run, to clinch the Saints Invitational Championship in Millstadt, Ill. After winning their final round robin game over St. Louis Academy 5-0 Sunday morning, the Brakettes advanced to bracket play as the #1 seed and faced the Academy once again in a semifinal game where Stratford came away with a 10-0 victory which forced a matchup with the St. Louis Saints in the title game won by Stratford 3-0.
In the day's first action, Patty Sciglimpaglia took to the circle and threw 5 shutout innings, with her sister Mary as her battery mate. In the first two innings, St. Louis Academy loaded the bases with one out, but Sciglimpaglia got out of both jams without allowing a run.
Stratford began their scoring in the bottom of the first as Val Suto and Britt Lampert both singled, and after Tatum Buckley was hit by a pitch, Jordan Whitley came through with a two run double to put the Brakettes up right away.
Two innings later, two more runs came across as Denise Denis reached on an error, and scored on an RBI triple by Buckley, who was awarded home on an errant throw from center field.
After scoring one run in the 4th inning, the Brakettes wrapped up the scoring and the game. In the bottom of the 5th inning. Denis led off with single, followed by another RBI triple by Buckley. Two batters later Sarah Bencivenga drove a deep fly to left center field for a sacrifice fly driving in another run. The game ended on an RBI single by Mary Sciglimpaglia.
Patty Sciglimpaglia struck out 4 over 5 innnings and allowed just 3 hits retiring the last 7 batters she faced.
A few hours later, the same two teams squared off in the semifinals and once again a stellar outing from Brakettes starting pitcher Sidney Smith led Stratford to a 10-0 win advancing them to the finals.
After being retired in order in the first inning, Stratford got its offense going in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Joran Whitley led off with a double, being driven in on a single by Sarah Bencivenga. Danni Kemp continued the rally with an RBI double and Hannah Cooper also drove in a run with a hard hit single. Val Suto capped off the scoring for the inning driving in two runs with a single of her own.
After scoring 1 run in the 3rd, the Brakettes rallied in the 4th inning to put the game away. After Buckley and Whitley reached base, they were both driven in by Bencivenga as she doubled. Two batter later, Cooper delivered an RBI single allowing the 10th run to score and get Stratford onto the finals.
Smith pitched well for 4 innings in this game, striking out 4 and allowing just 2 base hits. This was the LSU product's 2nd win of her debut weekend with the team.
In the final game of the tournament, Brandice Balschmiter pitched a complete game shutout as the Brakettes defeated the host Saints 3-0.
The Brakettes struck early with two in the 1st. Val Suto led off the game with a single. After a Britt Lampert sacrifice bunt, Denise Denis came through with an RBI triple to deep right center field putting Stratford on top. She would later score on a groundout by Tatum Buckley.
The only other run was scored in the next inning when Val Suto walked with two outs, and after advancing to 2nd on a passed ball, Suto scored on a single by Britt Lampert.
Balschmiter took care of the rest going the distance for the title. Brandice struck out 10 in the game and gave up three base hits, all singles.
The Brakettes return home to Frank Deluca field Thursday night when they will take on the CT High School All Stars in a special 9 inning game that begins at 6:30. Please check out all the latest updates and news at Brakettes.com.
