Brakettes Power Past Connecticut High School All Stars 22-3
June 16 - by Ilan Woll - The traditional 9 inning exhibition between Stratford's best facing the best talent from Connecticut's High School softball teams took place as Patti Sciglimpaglia and Tatum Buckley split the Brakettes pitching duties against 4 High School All Stars.
The CT HS All Stars took an early lead as Danbury's Julia Lener led off the game with an infield hit, reaching 3rd on a hit from Charline Plascynski of Bristol Eastern. With one out, star catcher Megan Hodgdon of the undefeated Cheshire High School drilled a two run single to leftfield, bringing in two. The next batter, Kaylie Crosby, smashed a screaming liner to right field. However, a very aggressive sliding grab by Denise Denis robbed Crosby, and then turned the double play to end the inning.
The Brakettes took the lead in the second frame as Tatum Buckley and Hannah Cooper singled. Danni Kemp then walked to load the based as Amber Radomski drilled a single to left which scored Buckley. Mary Sciglimbaglia then had an RBI ground ball and Val Suto reached on a throwing error, which scored Kemp for three runs in the frame. A double by Cooper and a single from Kemp added two more runs in the 3rd to give Stratford a 5-2 lead,
The 4th inning had offense from both teams as Julia Lener drilled a ball to deep center, putting Val Suto through the fence, but unable to hold onto the ball as the first home run of the season came from a visitor's bat. The home team scored six though, as Suto led off with a single, followed by a gapper from Britt Lampert. Denis then hit the ball deep to centerfield, just going under the fence for a 2-run ground rule double. A 2-run single from Cooper, and a productive out from Radomski extended the lead to 11-3.
For the first 8 and 1/2 games Stratford had been homerless. However, in the fifth Denise Denis found the pitch she wanted and pounded the ball over the right field fence for the first round tripper of the season.
The game came off the rails in the seventh as Stratford batted 15. Patti Sciglimpaglia, in as an extra hitter, homered in a nine run inning. Cooper then finished off her five hit game with her first round tripper of the season in the eighth inning.
Tatum Buckley, who had come in to start the sixth, extended her no hit innings on the season to 11, retiring all 12 batters she faced, and striking out nine of them for the twelve out save.
The Brakettes extended their record to 9-0. Along with Hannah Cooper's 5 hits, Denise Denis had 4. Suto, Buckley and Radomski had 3 each.
The Brakettes play Friday and Saturday with double headers at 7pm against the Newtown Rock Gold at DeLuca Field. All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com.
