Brakettes Split Doubleheader with Rock Gold
June 20 - The Brakettes rode an offensive onslaught to an 11-3 victory over the Rock Gold-Waye (PA) in the early game on Saturday night, but lost their first game of the season in the nightcap with a 1-0 decision.
Brandice Balschmiter fanned seven batters to earn her fifth win of the season in the opener, even after giving up the early lead to the Rock Gold.
Mackenzie Compton led off the first for the Rock Gold with a walk and stole second. A single by Syd Stevenson pushed Compton to third, and Stevenson swiped second base to put two in scoring position. Julia DeCosta was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and an Erin Collins' base hit scored two to put the Rock Gold up, 2-0.
The Brakettes cut into the lead in the home first after Val Suto reached on an error and advanced on a walk by Denise Denis. Sarah Bencivenga doubled to plate Suto and pull within 2-1.
After scoreless frames by Balschmiter and Rock Gold starter Sara Magro in the second, the Brakettes took the lead for good in the third.
Bencivenga singled and scored all the way from first on a base hit by Tatum Buckley, after an errant throw from center to third let her cruise home with the tying run. Buckley advanced to second on the throw and scored when Hannah Cooper singled up the middle, giving Stratford a 3-2 lead.
A two-run single by Bencivenga scored Mary Sciglimpaglia and Val Suto in the bottom of the fourth, stretching the margin to 5-2. Britt Lampert, who had reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on the play.
Tatum Buckley followed and smashed a three-run homer, her second long ball of the season. The blast put it out of reach, as the lead ballooned to 8-2.
The Rock Gold put up one run in the fifth with two outs, when DeCosta walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Collins singled to drive in DeCosta to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Patti Sciglimpaglia reached on a base hit with one out in the fifth and moved up on a single by Suto. Lampert doubled to score both runners, pushing the Rock Gold to the brink with a 10-3 tally. Denis was then hit by a pitch and Bencivenga walked, loading the bases for the Brakettes. Buckley singled to send Lampert home with the decisive run, ending the game in run rule style with an 11-3 final.
 Chelsea Whitcomb outlasted Buckley in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel in the late game, winning the 1-0 decision in a game where both teams managed just three hits.
The Rock Gold scored their only run in the first, after Stevenson singled with one out. Collins followed with a single, on which Stevenson tried to go from first to third. Lampert threw Stevenson out at the bag with a dart from left field for the second out, but Collins pulled into second. DaCosta reached on an error, which sent Collins home with the only run of the game.
The best chance for the Brakettes came in the third, when Patti Sciglimpaglia led off with a double. Mary Sciglimpaglia walked to put two on, and a passed ball put runners on second and third. Whitcomb retired the next three batters to wiggle out of trouble, and then worked 1-2-3 innings over the next three frames.
Buckley struck out five in the tough-luck loss, as she dropped to 2-1 on the year. Whitcomb was the only baserunner to reach second base for the Rock Gold after the first inning, when she singled in the seventh and stole a base.
Bencivenga singled to left to start the home seventh and reached second on a wild pitch, but the Brakettes could not bring her home. The Brakettes now stand at 12-1 for the season after the loss.
