Brakettes Win Two, Tie One in Pool Play at Lyons (PA) Cornfield Classic 17-0, 1-1, 13-0
June 10 - by Ilan Woll - With the annual road trip to Lyons, PA, the Brakettes had the opportunity to face three new opponents on the softball field. Two convincing wins and a time-limit tie resulted in Stratford finishing in the third seed after pool play, which sets up a Sunday morning 9am bracket game against the Jersey Flames.
Game 1 saw Kaysee Talcik facing off against the Lehigh Valley Bandits Breanna Young.
The Brakettes, who were the visitors by virtue of a coin flip, led off with infield hits by Val Suto, and newcomer Brittany Younan (photo), a graduate of Boston University. Denise Denis then crushed a ball to right centerfield for a two RBI triple, and scored on a Courtney Cashman single.
Stratford opened the flood gates in the second frame as 14 batters came to the plate, with a Denis double and a Gabby Laccona triple, which scored two. The Brakettes scored nine runs in the inning to extend the lead to 12-0. An additional Noel Lent triple led to a third inning run, and Jolie Duffner drove in two more with a double to left field in the 4th to complete the 17-0 win.
Brittany Younan dominated offensively with four hits in as many at bats. Additionally Noel Lent, Courtney Cashman, and Casey Harding each had three. Val Suto, Denise Denis, Gabby Laccona and Jolie Duffner completed the onslaught with two hits each.
Kaysee Talcik, meanwhile, allowed just three hits in her shutout, striking out three as well.
For game 2, the Nook Gold featured Reilly Gearhart of Lehigh University against Brandice Balschmiter.
For the first three innings, the pitchers had the upper hand. Brittany Younan singled and stole both second and third, but was unable to score. Noel Lent singled in the second, and Gabby Laccona walked, but was stranded at third base. Balschmiter meanwhile allowed only a single and a walk in those innings.
The Nook Gold scored an unearned run in the fourth. Becca Blatt reached on an error, and stole second. However, she was able to score on a wild pitch to give the early lead to the Nook Gold after four.
The Brakettes tied things up in the top of the fifth as Laccona walked, reaching second on a pickoff attempt. Mary Sciglimpaglia then sacrificed her to third, and a throwing error at third allowed the runner to score, tying the game at one.
With both teams unsuccessful at bringing in baserunners, Stratford threatened in the top of the sixth, with one out singles by Jolie Duffner and Noel Lent creating a potential rally. However, the Nook second baseman snagged a line drive and quickly flipped to first for the double play to end the threat.
Balschmiter successfully checked the Nook Gold hitters in the bottom of the sixth as time expired for the rare Brakettes tie at one.
Jolie Duffner and Noel Lent each had two hits on the game, as did the Nook Gold's Brit Garber. Brandice Balschmiter struck out nine batters walking three and allowing just three singles in the game.
The finale for the day saw Kaysee Talcik (photo) back in the circle facing the Rolling Thunder.
For two innings the Thunder and Brakettes played tight softball with the only run coming as Val Suto scored on a wild pitch. However, the bottom of the third saw things fall apart for the Thunder with eighteen Brakettes batting in a twelve run onslaught, capped by a bases loaded triple by Jolie Duffner. Talcik then finished off the Thunder in the top of the fourth for the run rule victory, 13-0.
Val Suto had three hits for the Brakettes, along with two each by Brittany Younan and Jolie Duffner. Kaysee Talcik allowed just one hit, striking out three in four innings.
The Brakettes, by virtue of the tie, take the three seed into bracket play, and will play on the Lyons second field against the Jersey Flames. A victory would then have Stratford playing the Lyons Spirit. These first two games will not be able to be webcast. Should they win both games, they will go on to the finals, which will be broadcast at approximately 12:30pm Sunday on Brakettes.com.
