Brakettes Win Two in Aunt Rosie's Pool Play
July 1 - The Stratford Brakettes posted a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Quebec (Canada) Rebelles on Saturday in Buffalo, erasing a 3-0 deficit to clinch the decision. Brandice Balschmiter struck out eight in the second game en route to a 4-0 win over the New York Avalanche.
The pair of wins came in pool play at the 2017 Aunt Rosie's Invitational at the Amherst Girls Softball Complex. The Brakettes finished pool play with the #2 seed, as the Ohio Lasers also finished 2-0 on Saturday and had the edge in tie-breakers.
Nicole Williams (3-1) earned the win in the early matchup, surrendering just three hits in the complete game victory over the Rebelles.
Quebec took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Sierra Besser-Paul doubled and scored on a base hit by Melissa LaForest. The Rebelles added to the lead in the fifth, when they took advantage of a pair of errors by the Brakettes. Besser-Paul had another double to drive in Sarah Manfried, and scored on one of those miscues.
Down 3-0 in the home fifth, Noel Lent reached on a base hit and continued to second base when the Rebelles lost track of her. Lent tagged up and went to third on a fly to right, and then scored on a single by Casey Harding.
Denise Denis singled with one out in the sixth and stole second base. She reached third on an error and scored the Brakettes' second run on a double by Jolie Duffner. After a wild pitch moved Duffner to third, Lauren Pitney delivered a single to tie it up at 3-3 (photo).
Harding opened the bottom of the seventh with a single, and moved up on a sac by Val Suto. Brittany Younan drove in Harding on a single with two outs to leave the Rebelles on the field and seal the deal.
Stratford plated two runs in the top of the third against the Avalanche, as Suto led off and singled. Younan also reached on a base hit, putting two on with no outs. Denis blasted a triple down the field in right to score both runners, giving Stratford a 2-0 lead.
Abby Abramson walked to lead off the fifth and moved up on a sac bunt by Hannah Cooper. Suto also earned a base on balls to put two on. Younan singled Abramson in with a single and moved to second on the throw. Suto advanced to third on the throw home and scored on a sac fly by Denis for a 4-0 margin.
After a bunt single in the fifth by Danna Heh, Balschmiter retired the last eight batters in order to close out the game. She improved to 5-0 on the season with the decision.
Stratford will take on the NY Diamond Girls Sunday morning at 10:30 in the quarterfinals of single-elimination bracket play.
