BRAKETTES HOST HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STARS FRIDAY NIGHT

June 17, 2010 - The Connecticut High School All-Stars will take on the Stratford Brakettes Friday night, June 18, in a 9-inning game at 6:30 o'clock at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. A total of nine former area standouts are on the all-star roster.

Newtown's Bob Guererra and Brookfield's Frank Bonacci will be the co-head coaches. Pitcher Katie Bowen and catcher Ashley Kuligowski of Newtown and first baseman Stephanie Moss and pitcher Kayla Berardi of Brookfield headine the local contingent, which also includes Masuk first baseman Christine Leo, Westhill's pitcher Jen Joseph and shortstop Julianne Vincent, Lauralton catcher Courtney Collins, and Seymour outfielder Amanda Willette.

The remainder of the all-star roster includes: pitcher Emily Bohmer of Lewis Mills; Plainville's Shelby Marquis, Calyn Dalke, and Katie Treado; Naugatuck infielder Julia Longo; Bristol Eastern second baseman Rachele Beaudoin and pitcher Alyssa Boutin; Maloney of Meriden outfielder Taylor Smith; and Hamden outfielder Cara DeRoy.

Baylor University sophomore standout Whitney Canion (2-0, 0.00 ERA) will make her home debut for the Brakettes. Last week in Lyons, PA, Canion shut out the Spirit 2-0 and 6-0 as she struck out 13 batters in each game. The second game was a no-hit effort. Canion was unable to play in the home opener two weeks ago because of NCAA rules that prohibit medical red-shirts from playing summer ball until the end of the College World Series.

Erin Gallagher (3-1) also will see action this weekend as the Brakettes host the New York City Havoc in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. The Havoc captured last year's inaugural Women's Major National Tournament at DeLuca, beating the Breakers in the finals while the Brakettes finished third.

John Stratton's Brakettes enter with a 9-1 overall record, highlighted by last weekend's four-game sweep of the Spirit as they allowed only one run. The Mouse sisters, third baseman Jessica and newcomer Lyndsay, both turned in strong offensive outings last week. Denise Denis, Carly Normandin, and second baseman Ashley Waters continue to lead the Brakettes in hitting.

Saturday is Stratford PAL Softball Day with all league players guests of the Brakettes. The Brakettes admit all youth league players who wear their team t-shirt free all season. All Brakettes home games will be video webcast on www.brakettes.com.
