Kelly Kretschman returns to Stratford this time as a member of the 2006 NPF Connecticut Brakettes. Three years ago she became an instant crowd favorite in helping the Stratford Brakettes post a 78-1 record and win their 25th National ASA title. The former University of Alabama All-America then realized a life-long dream as she was a member of Team USA that captured the 2004 Olympic gold medal in Athens, Greece. The accolades continued in 2005 for the Indian Harbour Beach, FL, resident. The 5-foot-6 power-hitting outfielder hit .280 and drove in 13 runs as she sparked the Akron Racers to the National Pro Fastpitch league championship. A 2002 general health studies graduate from Alabama, Kretschman also was an alternate on the 2000 Olympic team. Still ranked 11th among all-time NCAA Division I home run leaders with 60, Kelly has been part of Team USA Softball for six years. Selected to the NFCA All-America team four years in a row, she also was a Honda Award nominee for the nations softball player of the year in 2001. Back in 2003, Kelly joined the Stratford Brakettes for the final third of the season after leading the USA Softball Elite Team to the gold medal in the Canada Cup where she hit a team-best .355 with 11 hits and six RBI. Playing in 22 games for the Brakettes, she put up some unbelievable offensive numbers with 35 runs scored, 42 hits, a team high 13 doubles, six home runs and 24 RBI. Named co-MVP of the Northeast Seaboard League championship tournament, Kretschman also earned first team All-America laurels in the ASA tourney in Pekin, IL.
