Jessica Merchant is another former Brakettes player who has rejoined the team for its maiden season in National Pro Fastpitch. A member of the 2004 ASA champion Brakettes, Merchant was the 2005 first-round draft pick of the New England Riptide. Playing shortstop for the Riptide, the Wayland, MI, native hit .254 with three home runs and 18 RBI last year. Jessica was one of the key members of the 2004 Brakettes who compiled a 50-4 record and captured the crown in Auburn, AL. She hit .333 with six triples, five home runs and 32 RBI, while her defense was superb. After the Brakettes 26th national title, Merchant helped the University of Michigan end a west coast stranglehold on the NCAA Division I softball crown with Michigans 2005 triumph. A two-time NFCA All-America shortstop, Merchant is Michigans all-time home run (46) leader and she shares the single-season mark with Samantha Findlay at 21. Merchant also is third all-time in games started (252), and fourth in both career RBI (155) and doubles (48). Last year she was a member of the USA Softball Elite Team that won the Intercontinental Cup title. Hitting .500 with a home run and eight RBI, she was chosen the events MVP. Merchant, a 2005 U-M graduate with a degree in sports management and communication, served as a volunteer coach at Michigan this season. She is invited to the Team USA Selection camp June 13-17.
