Leslie Malerich made only two starts in 2007, but they were quality ones as she allowed only two hits in 10 innings to notch a pair of victories. Her only start in the ASA Nationals was good enough to earn First Team All-America laurels for the first time as a Brakette. A regular in the rotation in 2001 and 2005, Malerich has spent a great deal of time playing for the Italian National Team since 2002. Her Italian resume is highlighted by the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens where she earned the team's only victory. Malerich picked up right where she left off by compiling a 15-3 record with a 0.57 ERA in 2005. In 110 innings, she struck out 116 batters and she picked up three victories over NPF clubs. Although she was on the 2006 Connecticut Brakettes' roster, she was unable to play as she spent the summer pitching for Italy. Last year the Italian team just missed earning a bid to this year's Olympics. A graduate of Florida State University, Malerich had three no-hitters her rookie year with the Brakettes, including the opening game of the ASA National Championship in Phoenix, AZ, against the Bloomington, IL, Lady Hearts. In her senior year at FSU, Malerich pitched the Lady Seminoles to a berth in the College World Series and she recorded wins over UCLA and Nebraska. Twice named first team All-State at Merrillville, IN, High School, she was inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame in 2005. She is married to Rob Baird, the Brakettes' Assistant General Manager and the team's radio voice.
