When Hannah Burgess was in junior high school, she was a right-handed batter. But Woodstock Academy Coach Jason Gerum envisioned her becoming a classic left-handed slapper. Hannah had all the prerequisites to make it happen - fleetness afoot, a perfect slap-swing technique, and the ability to reach base consistently. In addition, her desire to excel and a great work ethic enabled Hannah to master the skill. Gerum then inserted her as the team's leadoff hitter to maximize her at bats in a game. The two-year varsity starter compiled a .559 career batting average with 48 runs and 80 hits, which enabled her to earn a Division I scholarship to Colgate University. She played in 12 games this spring before the season ended prematurely. Selected as a first-team All-Stater in 2018, Hannah gained All-Eastern Connecticut Conference acclaim as a senior.
