Position: P/OF Bats: L Throws: L School: Norwich Free Academy/Tufts Resides: Bozrah, CT Sophia DiCocco of Norwich Free Academy had a Joan Joyce moment (Hall of Fame pitcher Joyce replaced injured HOF star Bertha Tickey on the mound in mid-game in the first ever ASA national championship game at Raybestos Memorial Field in 1958). Last June 3 in the CIAC Class LL semi-finals against third-seeded Cheshire, the left fielder/backup pitcher came on in relief of starter and All-Stater Bailey Comeau, who sustained a pitching hand injury. Armed with a 3-run lead, she protected it to send the Wildcats to finals with a 4-2 win. Boasting a screwball, fast ball, and back-breaking change, DiCocco was expected to lead NFA deep into this year's tournament. A three-year outfield starter, Sophia hit .367 with 29 hits and she needed only 25 hits to reach 100 for her career. NFA Coach Bryan Burdick calls DiCocco, who is heading to Tufts University, a softball workaholic who has a bright future. The batter who sent Comeau to the sidelines was Mia Juodaitis, who now plays for the Stratford Brakettes. |
