When does an All-State high school catcher morph into a college scholarship shortstop? The answer is found at Manhattan College where freshman Lauren Rende is the Jaspers' touted starting shortstop. She hit .382 (13-for-34) with four RBI this spring for MC. Rende, the all-everything alum from Ardsley High, had a season you can't help but envy. She had a storybook five-year varsity career. Yes, she played as an eighth grader. Her natural position is shortstop, but the Panthers needed a catcher and Lauren just happened to be the best candidate. She capped a 24-3 senior season in leading Ardsley to the NYSSWA Class B championship in 2019, the school's first state crown for a female team. The 5-foot-5 power machine hit .663 and she set records with 61 hits, 12 home runs and 63 RBI. She scored 48 runs, had 22 doubles, and only fanned three times. She was first team All-State and the Westchester/Putnam County Player of the Year. If you're wondering who played shortstop for Ardsley, it was Lauren's sophomore sister Sarah, who also earned first team All-State.
