Vince Lombardi once said: “Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing.” When talking about the McFarland family in Monroe, CT, no truer words were ever spoken. Megan McFarland joins the Junior Brakettes after a superlative softball career at Masuk High where she played a vital part in the Panthers consecutive CIAC Class L softball championships in 2018 and 2019. Now she has taken her talents to the University of Bridgeport's established program and earned a starting outfield berth as a freshman. She hit .242 for the 8-5 Purple Knights. Her double to left field started the winning rally in the championship game against East Haven last June 7 to cap a 26-1 season and a two-year stretch when the Panthers won 53 of 54 outings. Her defensive gem from center field in the finals also earned the No. 2 spot on ESPN's top 10 plays of the day. A two-time All-Stater, McFarland hit .530 with 22 RBI and a .557 on-base percentage for Coach Leigh Barone in 2019. Her career stats are equally impressive with 138 hits, 72 RBI, 110 RBI, and a .465 batting average. The day after the CIAC title, Megan's father Jack McFarland coached Staples High of Westport to its second Class LL baseball crown in the past three years. Jack has also led the Wreckers to seven FCIAC championships and was the coach on the 2013 Westport Little League all-stars who finished runner-up in the Little League World Series United States Championship game. I doubt another family can top that!
